What fits in a 20-yard dumpster?

A 20-yard dumpster holds about 7–10 pickup-truck loads of debris. Typical jobs that fit are listed below. These are typical examples, not limits; the weight of the debris decides the final bill more than the space it takes.

  • A kitchen remodel of about 200–300 sq ft (cabinets, counters, drywall, flooring)
  • Most single-layer asphalt roofs up to about 25 squares, by weight
  • A whole-house decluttering before a move or sale
  • An estate cleanout of a three-bedroom home

Will a 20-yard dumpster go over the weight limit?

A 20-yard dumpster includes 3 tons (6,000 lb). Roofing is the common weight risk. If your shingles weigh 80 lb per bundle and a square takes 3 bundles, one square weighs 240 lb, so 25 squares × 240 lb = 6,000 lb = 3 tons. A heavier shingle or a second layer pushes past the included weight.

Worked example: your 20-yard includes 3 tons. The scale ticket shows 3.42 tons net. You pay for 0.42 tons (840 lb) at $75 per ton, which is $31.50. We charge the exact pound and never round up to the next ton.

Will a 20-yard dumpster fit in my driveway?

The 20-yard dumpster needs a level spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance to set it down. Our drivers place wooden boards under the steel rails so concrete and asphalt do not crack or scratch.

Keep the spot clear of parked cars, low wires and locked gates. If the driver arrives and cannot place the bin, a $125 trip fee applies. Driveway and street placement guide.

Is the 20-yard the right size, or should I go up or down?

Too small means a second haul, and a swap is billed as a new flat-rate rental. Too big means paying for space you do not fill. When volume is the question and the debris is light, round up. When the debris is heavy, the weight limit decides, not the volume.

20-yard dumpster questions

How much can you fit in a 20-yard dumpster?

About 7 to 10 pickup loads by volume, assuming an 8-foot pickup bed loaded level holds about 2 to 3 cubic yards. By weight, the 20-yard includes 3 tons before overage.

Can I put concrete in a 20-yard dumpster?

Heavy debris like concrete, dirt and brick goes only in the 10-yard and 15-yard sizes. A small amount mixed into a remodel load is weighed with everything else.

Is a 20-yard dumpster big enough for a roof?

A 20-yard handles most single-layer roofs up to about 25 squares by weight. Two layers or heavy architectural shingles usually call for a second haul or a 30-yard, and the weight still decides the bill.

How long is a 20-yard dumpster?

The 20-yard is 22 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4 feet tall on the outside. Plan for the full 22 feet plus room for the truck to back in.
