What size dumpster do I need?
Most garage cleanouts fit a 10-yard or 15-yard dumpster. Most roofs, kitchen remodels and whole-house cleanouts fit a 20-yard. Construction sites and additions usually need a 30-yard. Heavy debris such as concrete, dirt or brick goes only in a 10-yard or 15-yard, filled halfway.
Size picker
Suggested: 15-yard dumpster, 2.5 tons and 7 days included. Not sure? Call (945) 313-7111 and we will confirm the size before dispatch.
How the picker decides: roofs start at 20-yard; kitchens 15 to 30-yard by size; bathrooms 10 to 15-yard; garage or room cleanouts 10 to 20-yard; whole-house cleanouts 15 to 30-yard; construction and demolition 20 to 40-yard; yard waste 10 to 20-yard. Any heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick, tile) moves you to the 10-yard or 15-yard, loaded halfway, because those materials reach the weight limit long before the bin looks full.
How do the five dumpster sizes compare?
Our five roll-off dumpsters run from 10 to 40 cubic yards. Each includes 7 rental days and between 2 and 6 tons of debris. The table lists outside dimensions, pickup-truck equivalents and the jobs each size usually handles, with a link to the full page for each size.
| Size | Dimensions | Pickup loads | Included weight | Rental | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 12 × 8 × 3.5 ft | 3–5 | 2 tons | 7 days | Concrete, dirt or brick, a small bathroom remodel, a one-room cleanout (heavy debris allowed) |
| 15-yard | 16 × 7.5 × 4.5 ft | 5–7 | 2.5 tons | 7 days | A garage cleanout, a small roof, flooring or deck removal (heavy debris allowed) |
| 20-yard | 22 × 8 × 4 ft | 7–10 | 3 tons | 7 days | A kitchen remodel, whole-house decluttering, most single-layer roofs |
| 30-yard | 22 × 8 × 6 ft | 10–15 | 4 tons | 7 days | New construction, a home addition, a large tear-out or estate cleanout |
| 40-yard | 22 × 7.5 × 8 ft | 12–16 | 5–6 tons | 7 days | Major demolition, new construction, large commercial cleanouts |
How do I turn cubic yards into something I can picture?
One cubic yard is a 3 × 3 × 3 foot box. An 8-foot pickup bed loaded level to the top of the sides holds about 2 to 3 cubic yards, so a 20-yard dumpster equals about 7 to 10 pickup loads. A 12 × 12 ft room of furniture and boxes is often 5 to 8 cubic yards.
| Job | Typical size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom gut | 10-yard | Tile and tubs are dense; one room is low volume |
| Two-car garage | 15-yard | Mixed bulky items, moderate weight |
| Kitchen remodel | 20-yard | Cabinets and drywall take space |
| 25-square roof, one layer | 20-yard | About 3 tons of shingles at 240 lb per square |
| Home addition | 30-yard | Bulky framing scrap and packaging |
| Patio removal | 10-yard or 15-yard | Concrete is limited to half full |
What does picking the wrong size cost?
Picking too small costs a second haul, because a swap counts as a new flat-rate rental. Picking too big costs only the difference between two sizes. When debris is light and you are unsure, round up one size. When debris is heavy, size down and follow the halfway fill line instead.
Weight is the other half of the decision. Read how dumpster weight is billed before you choose, and see what a dumpster rental costs.
Dumpster size questions
What size dumpster do I need for a house cleanout?
A one-room or garage cleanout usually fits a 10-yard or 15-yard. A whole three-bedroom house usually needs a 20-yard, and a packed house or estate a 30-yard.
What is the most common dumpster size?
The 20-yard is the most common pick for homeowners, because its 22-foot length fits a kitchen remodel, most roofs and whole-house decluttering while still fitting most driveways.
Is it cheaper to get a bigger dumpster?
A bigger dumpster costs more up front but less than a second haul. A swap or second dumpster is billed as a new flat-rate rental, so round up when the debris is light and you are unsure.
What does 'yard' mean in a 20-yard dumpster?
The yard is a cubic yard of space, 3 × 3 × 3 feet. A 20-yard dumpster holds about 20 cubic yards of loosely loaded debris.
Which dumpster size is best for concrete?
Concrete, dirt and brick go only in the 10-yard or 15-yard, loaded no higher than halfway up the walls. Larger bins would exceed the truck's legal road weight.
