What fits in a 40-yard dumpster?

A 40-yard dumpster holds about 12–16 pickup-truck loads of debris. Typical jobs that fit are listed below. These are typical examples, not limits; the weight of the debris decides the final bill more than the space it takes.

  • Whole-building interior demolition (drywall, ceilings, fixtures)
  • New-construction framing scrap, packaging and cleanup on a large build
  • A large commercial or warehouse cleanout
  • A big estate or hoarder cleanout with bulky, lighter debris

Will a 40-yard dumpster go over the weight limit?

A 40-yard dumpster holds 5 to 6 tons. The 40-yard is about volume: mixed construction debris averages about 417 lb per cubic yard (EPA), so 30 cubic yards of it is about 6.3 tons. Dense debris such as concrete, dirt or roofing goes in a smaller bin instead, because the 40-yard would reach the truck's legal weight long before it is full.

Worked example: your 40-yard includes 5 tons. The scale ticket shows 5.35 tons net. You pay for 0.35 tons (700 lb) at $75 per ton, which is $26.25. We charge the exact pound and never round up to the next ton.

Will a 40-yard dumpster fit in my driveway?

The 40-yard dumpster needs a level spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance to set it down. Our drivers place wooden boards under the steel rails so concrete and asphalt do not crack or scratch.

Keep the spot clear of parked cars, low wires and locked gates. If the driver arrives and cannot place the bin, a $125 trip fee applies. Driveway and street placement guide.

Is the 40-yard the right size, or should I go up or down?

Too small means a second haul, and a swap is billed as a new flat-rate rental. Too big means paying for space you do not fill. When volume is the question and the debris is light, round up. When the debris is heavy, the weight limit decides, not the volume.
